HBO Max: What is it and what's the difference?

HBO Now and HBO Go are great services, but you can’t always access them when you want to watch something. But what if we told you that there was going to be an HBO streaming service that would finally put to rest all of your TV-watching woes? It’s true! That’s why we’re here to explain the differences between HBO Max, HBO Now, and HBO Go so that you can use these services at their best when you sign up.

Where to watch HBO Max

If you’re interested in subscribing to HBO Max, there are a few different options for paying for your subscription. The first option is to subscribe through an existing TV provider (such as Verizon or Dish) or other online service (like Amazon Prime). If you already pay for any of these services, you’ll be able to subscribe to HBO Max through them. The second option is via direct billing from HBO itself.

How much does it cost?

HBO Now costs $14.99 per month, but with HBO Max you’ll be looking at paying either $16.99 or $19.99 per month, depending on whether you want to view in SD or HD. As for other add-ons like Starz ($9/month) or Cinemax ($9/month), those are separate fees altogether.

Who owns HBO Max

AT&T does. The telecom giant won its bid for Time Warner, which owns HBO, for $85 billion in 2018. This means that while you may be used to paying your cable company a monthly fee to get HBO Now, you’ll soon have to pay your phone company instead. And if you want any of that other stuff on TV (like sports), you’ll have to pay both companies—or at least one of them—to get it. If all of that sounds confusing, we don’t blame you; we just hope to clear things up a bit with our breakdown below.

Why Watch Game of Thrones on HBO Max

Game of Thrones is one of HBO’s most beloved shows, but now that its final season has come to a close, you might be wondering where to turn. Luckily, HBO recently launched a new streaming service—HBO Max—that makes it possible to keep catching up on all your favorite shows. You can watch on any device via the HBO app, which means you don’t have to worry about switching platforms. And while HBO Go requires an existing cable or satellite subscription, HBO Max can be accessed as part of your paid subscription to Amazon Prime (which you should definitely have anyway). If you aren’t already a Prime member, get started with a free 30-day trial here!

Is there anything else like Game of Thrones on here?

We’ve all been there—you finish up a new show, craving a similar show to binge on. When you find another series that looks promising, you get hyped... only to realize it’s nothing like Game of Thrones. For anyone who watched Big Little Lies and immediately wanted more murder mysteries/murder family dramas (go figure), we’ve rounded up shows that were compared to your favorite HBO smash hit. There are still spoilers ahead, so be warned!

5 Things You Don't Know About Me

#3—I know there’s a fine line between love and hate, but I also know there’s a thin one between love and apathy. And right now, I’m feeling pretty apathetic about our relationship. Sometimes, that can be good—I mean, it can push you to work through conflicts more quickly or give you courage to move on if necessary. But other times, indifference just makes people run in circles as they talk past each other trying to find common ground. If we want to make things work long-term (and who doesn't?), then we need some fresh perspective on how to move forward together—and fast!
